Scotland’s temperate rainforest

The purpose of this post is to outline my plans for June, the final month of my sabbatical. June is ramping up to be a busy month for my family. It’s my daughters last year of primary school, so there are lots of events, shows and meetings relating to that, which are all very exciting. My son and daughter both have piano exams and birthdays (are they both good things?). And there are various other responsibilities that I need to attend to.

However, there is still so much to do. A few weeks ago, I watched this video which gave me a helpful big picture of the history of Scotland’s landscape.

I’m also currently reading Regeneration, a book about the Mar Estate in the Cairngorms, which is all about regenerating this great estate in line with three main guiding statements:

These things have informed my decisions for the month of June, and priorities are onlined below:

All these places have nature regeneration at their heart, and are perhaps going about this process in different ways. The last three places also have lots of Munros that are on my hit list.

So many variables affect how much of this list gets completed in the coming month, but I am hopeful. Watch this space for updates!

I’m James Spence

I’ve been a teacher of physics for 22 years in Edinburgh at George Watson’s College. I’m currently on sabbatical learning about how to deliver inspiring environment education to young people.

This is the place where I plan to keep a record of what I’m doing on my sabbatical from physics teaching during the spring of 2024
